to create a forum where young people can express our views on politics and policy

Grassroots Success Story

Campaign 101 started off in February 2004 as a team of 7 students, 1 adult, and the goal of getting more students involved in progressive, grassroots politics in Virginia.

We decided to work together to set up a weekend of intensive workshops to train other student activists how to organize. We teamed up with a professional political group that promised to arrange speakers and handle our finances while we provided the research and sweat equity for a weekend student training. Unfortunately, our partner withdrew in June, leaving us just over a month to completely rebuild our program from the ground up, including designing a new website, raising new funds, and doing all of our publicity and promotions from scratch.

To bootstrap the project, we turned to the fundamentals of retail politics. We reached out to democrats and progressive political groups across the state to ask for help, including NOW, the NAACP, and the Virginia Education Association. With an operating budget of zero we sent email after email (because it is free), and followed up with phone calls (because they are effective), to hundreds of students, teachers, elected officials, and political activists. We recruited at local Democratic meetings, at MeetUps, and at theatres showing Fahrenheit 9/11. And we kept the press informed every step of the way.

The local branch of the VEA offered us their space to use for free. The Fairfax Young Democrats handled the money for us so we wouldn’t have to form a PAC. Local elected officials, from the school board up to the Virginia Senate Minority Leader, and the Chairman of the Virginia State Party generously offered their time, on extremely short notice, to address the students, and Congressman Jim Moran saved the project with his generous financial contribution. Local Democrats donated meals and materials, and professional political operatives from Northern Virginia and DC stepped up to speak for free and also to use their personal connections to help us find other trainers. The training itself became an exercise in the kind of coalition-building, creative thinking, and community activism that grassroots politics at its best is all about.

The training, on July 10 & 11, was a success beyond what we ever imagined back in February. The alumni are now working together on a collaborative blog, http://c101.blogspot.com, to discuss policy and politics from a youth activist perspective, as well as organizing “The George W. Bush Farwell Tour,” a concert/rally/voter registration drive in August. And, we are all making plans for how we can get more students involved when we go back to school.

I’ll be speaking on a panel about youth activism at DemocracyFest this weekend representing Campaign 101, and we hope our experience and the lessons we’ve learned can help support other student organizers around the country.

We will continue to maintain the Campaign 101 website to publicize the ongoing projects of the Campaign 101 Alumni.

We are holding a Spirit of Campaign 101 Photography Contest for the photograph that best captures the real spirit of Campaign 101. Please bring your cameras and try to get the best candid picture. We'll send participants details after the training on how to submit your pictures.

We'll have a list of unregistered voters to call, and scripts to read when we're on the phone. Afterwards, we'll send a helpful kit to anyone who tells us they'd like to register to vote, and follow up to make sure they do. This has been shown to be a very effective way to register voters - and there's never been a more important time to boost registration than in the lead-up to this November's election!

Since we'll be spending a good deal of the time at the party on the phone, it's important that you bring your own cell phone if you can. We'll try to have a few extra on hand in case you can't bring one. But lists of folks to call, scripts of what to say, and good company will be provided.

Time for us to roll up our sleeves!

Some handy information before you leave home...

Location: Campaign 101 takes place at the Fairfax Education Association, located at 3917 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax, VA 22030. We are happy to send you a map or directions by email.

Registration Fee: The registration fee is $50. Please make checks payable to the "Fairfax Young Democrats," who are graciously handling the finances on the project for us.

Schedule: Check in is from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 10. Workshops run from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday. The Campaign 101 Volunteer/Intern Job Fair takes place 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10. There will be a final Campaign 101 Phone Bank to register new voters from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Parking: Parking is available on site, free of charge.

Meals: The training fee includes a light breakfast on Saturday & Sunday; lunch and dinner on Saturday, and lunch on Sunday. Meals and snacks will be offered college cafeteria style and will be provided for the entire training. Vegetarian options will be available. Any student with other special dietary needs should contact shaulaevans@comcast.net before 5:00 on Friday.

Michael Moore is turning up the heat with his new movie, Fahrenheit 9/11, and Campaign 101 is diving into the heart of the fire to spread the word about our training to people who have seen the movie.

Campaign 101 is a grassroots Democratic campaign training for high school and college students. We're writing to ask you to help us make Campaign 101's Operation Firejump a success.

Ways You Can Help

1. Hand out Campaign 101 flyers at a showing of Fahrenheit 9/11

2. Hand out Campaign 101 flyers at F/911 House Parties.

3. Recruit for your own Democratic or Progressive Group!

Fairfax County Schoolboard At-Large Member Janet Oleszek will be joining us at the job fair. Janet has a strong commitment to education issues and youth outreach and first-hand experience with innovative voter registration and absentee ballot drives.

Can you help us recruit at theatres this weekend?

There are now 15 theaters across Virginia and counting that will be showing Michael Moore's documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11, about the ties between the Bush family and the Saudi Royal family this weekend.

The Campaign 101 team will be taking flyers to as many showings at as many movie theatres as we can cover this weekend and next week, to hand out to people leaving the theatres.

Please help us out by taking a shift at a theater in your area.

Our biggest challenge for Campaign 101 right now is getting the word out to Virginia students and signing up participants. If you can help us hand out flyers it will be a HUGE boost to our program.

We've heard that the Virginia Young Democrats and other democratic and progressive groups are planning on working the theatres as well. We'd love to collaborate with you! If you know about another group planning a similar campaign this weekend, drop us a line on how we can work together.

What is Campaign 101?

Campaign 101 is a project to train high school and college students in progressive, grassroots campaign skills.

Is this a partisan project?

Hell, yeah. :) We are all Democrats, and working hard to make Virginia a Democratic state again.

When is Campaign 101 taking place?

Campaign 101 will take place Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11. We are currently negotiating with speakers and finalizing the itinerary. We will post updates to this site as details are confirmed.

Where is this all happening?

Good question. We originally planned to hold Campaign 101 at the Fairfax campus of George Mason University (in Virginia). However, we are currently exploring more cost-effective options in Northern Virginia. We look forward to announcing the official location for Campaign 101 on this site in the next few days.

Who is behind Campaign 101? Why are you doing this?

That counts as two questions. ;)

Campaign 101 is a real grassroots project. The organizers are a team of high school students from different schools in Virginia, plus one adult advisor.

We got together in February because we believe that youth participation in politics is really important. We've all been involved with politics in Virginia one way or another, either by working on local election campaigns, or getting involved with our school Democratic or political clubs--often both. We wanted to find a way to make political participation more accessible to other students, show them how exciting politics can be, and give them the skills to get involved in a higher level. We decided the best way to do that would be to organize a campaign skills training that would bring together students from all over the Commonwealth along with top state and national trainers and political figures.

And no, we're not making a profit at this. We have collectively put in several thousand hours of (unpaid) work because we believe that what we're doing is that important.

Speaking of money, how much does it cost to participate?

That's another good question. ;)

Our original registration fee was $100.

However, we are looking for a cheaper facility so we can lower our costs. Our budget is in flux at the moment, but we look forward to updating you through this site about the new participation fees, and we promise they will be substantially reduced.

Student Campaign Training Needs Your Help

Campaign 101, a grasroots political training workshop for high school and college students, needs your help.

Bad News/Good News

Campaign 101 suffered a setback earlier this month when our original sponsors withdrew.

We've been asking our friends for help so we can continue Campaign 101 on our own, and the Virginia Young Democrats have stepped up as a major sponsor.

With the VYD's support, Campaign 101 is going forward as scheduled on July 10 and 11, with some minor changes and improvements. But, with less than a month to go, and a lot of work to do, we are writing to ask you to help us make our goal come true of training Virginia students in progressive grassroots campaign skills.

Registration is now the critical factor in making this project a success. Help us get register participants by getting the word out to high school and college students throughout Virginia.
